UAE Launches Permanent ‘Donate Your Own Device’ Initiative

Dubai, Oct. 17, 2024 — What began as a campaign to collect 10,000 used electronic devices has transformed into a major movement in the UAE, significantly benefiting underprivileged students worldwide. The ‘Donate Your Own Device’ initiative will now become a permanent annual program, as announced on Thursday.

The campaign, launched in 2023, has surpassed expectations by collecting over 50,000 electronic devices—400% more than its original target. Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, shared the news on social media platform X, highlighting the campaign’s success.

Al Olama noted that the collected devices would have contributed to 120 tonnes of electronic waste. Instead, these gadgets are being refurbished and recycled to provide essential learning tools for students in need. “This initiative promotes environmental sustainability while creating innovative educational opportunities,” he said.

Residents of the UAE can participate by donating devices either as individuals or through organizations. Donations can be made at designated collection centers, with a home pickup option also available.

Al Olama expressed gratitude to both government and private entities that supported the campaign, emphasizing its significant impact on education and environmental sustainability. The initiative aims to lay the groundwork for a future rooted in education and knowledge.
