UAE Ranks Third Globally in Cybersecurity Efforts Amid Rising Threats

The UAE has positioned itself as a global leader in cybersecurity, ranking third worldwide in combating cyberattacks, according to Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of cybersecurity for the UAE Government. Speaking at the FutureSec Summit 2024, he highlighted that the frequency and volume of cyber threats have surged, largely due to geopolitical tensions.

“The UAE has been under cyberattack for a long time, and recently, the number of attacks has increased dramatically,” Dr. Al Kuwaiti stated. He emphasized that, despite these challenges, the UAE’s robust measures have successfully detected and thwarted a significant number of attacks.

Recent statistics indicate that the UAE faced approximately 200,000 cyberattacks in just one week, all of which were effectively managed due to stringent cybersecurity protocols and collaboration with domestic and international partners. The UAE has also received accolades, ranking first in the United Nations’ Global Cybersecurity Index, underscoring the collective efforts of the government, private sector, and academic institutions.

Addressing the threat of ransomware, which has risen by 32% globally, Dr. Al Kuwaiti noted that proactive measures are being implemented, including regular cyber drills to enhance preparedness and compliance across various sectors. “Last week, we conducted a National Cyber Drill to ensure communication channels are established and personnel are trained,” he added.

Looking ahead, the UAE is set to introduce new laws and regulations to strengthen its cybersecurity framework. Dr. Al Kuwaiti mentioned the necessity for upgrades to post-quantum cryptography systems, particularly within the financial sector and critical infrastructure.

“We’re not only planning but executing strategies to ensure the safety and security of all entities in the UAE,” he asserted. He urged vigilance among citizens and organizations, encouraging the reporting of cyber incidents to bolster the nation’s defenses against cyber threats.
