StudyMate: Dubai’s Innovative Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Platform

In Dubai, a new wave of learning is taking shape with StudyMate, an online peer-to-peer platform that connects students and tutors for free. This initiative is particularly appealing to students who seek a more relatable and engaging educational experience.

Student Success Story

Avyan Arya, a 14-year-old student at Dubai College, discovered StudyMate while preparing for an important test. “I wanted a relatable experience, and this was a great way to do that,” he shared. Through his sessions with tutor Tang Li, Avyan enjoyed a personalized learning experience that felt more like studying with a friend than traditional tuition. “I learned a lot over the four weeks, from the reflex arc to enzymes,” he recalled.

The Vision Behind StudyMate

The platform was founded by Advay Gupta, a student at Dubai College, who found his calling for teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially helping his peers and younger students, he recognized the growing demand for affordable tutoring, especially in a market where private lessons can cost between Dh200 and Dh500 per hour.

Inspired by a U.S. platform called Schoolhouse, which focuses on American curricula, Gupta saw an opportunity to create a similar resource tailored to the diverse educational needs of students in the UAE.

How StudyMate Works

StudyMate operates through organized teaching “camps” rather than ongoing sessions. Students and potential tutors fill out forms on the website, and Gupta’s team carefully selects tutors based on academic credentials and communication skills. Each tutor undergoes a rigorous interview process to ensure they can effectively teach their subject.

Once matched, students receive tailored support that aligns with their specific curricula—be it IB, British, American, or others—ensuring a personalized and effective learning experience.

Community Engagement and Future Goals

The platform has attracted around 70 students and 50 tutors since its inception. Tutors like South African expat Mohammed Anas Sallie appreciate the opportunity to gain experience and contribute to the community. “It’s a good gateway into teaching,” he noted.

Gupta envisions expanding StudyMate’s reach to underserved communities, inspired by his experiences in orphanages in India and Nepal. He is already in discussions to provide lessons to children in need during his free time and holidays.

Looking Ahead

As Gupta prepares to graduate, he is keen on finding successors to carry on the initiative, ensuring that StudyMate continues to thrive. With its focus on affordability, accessibility, and community engagement, StudyMate is not just a tutoring platform—it’s a movement towards a more inclusive educational landscape in Dubai.
