UAE Expands Agrotourism Initiative to Boost Local Farming and Eco-Tourism

Dubai, UAE — More farms across the UAE are opening their doors to visitors as part of a new agrotourism initiative designed to highlight the country’s agricultural innovation and sustainable practices. The initiative, which is being led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE), aims to educate the public, promote local produce, and support the farming community as part of the “Plant the Emirates” program launched last month.

According to Mohammed Saeed Sultan Al Nuaimi, undersecretary of the MoCCAE, the initiative will be rolled out across all Emirates in collaboration with local authorities and farms. “This initiative is focused on educating the public and students on how the UAE is growing its food supply, showcasing local agricultural products, and generating support for our farmers,” Al Nuaimi explained.

The agrotourism initiative will also align with the UAE’s domestic tourism campaign, “World’s Coolest Winter,” which this year has a special emphasis on “Green Tourism.” Under this theme, residents and visitors will be encouraged to explore local farms, learn about sustainable farming practices, and experience firsthand how produce is grown in the UAE’s challenging desert climate.

Farms as Green Oases in the Desert

Despite the challenges of farming in an arid environment, farms across the UAE have become “green oases,” successfully growing a variety of crops including strawberries, wheat, saffron, and even tropical fruits. Many of these farms are opening their gates to tourists, offering a rare glimpse into agricultural life in the region.

One such success story is that of Ahmed Alhafiti, an Emirati farmer who has seen growing interest in his Wadi Difta Plantation in Fujairah. Despite the farm’s modest size of just 200 square meters, it has attracted attention for its unique crops, including cashews, pistachios, jackfruit, and spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and cardamom. “The demand for agrotourism has been tremendous. Tourism companies are constantly reaching out to bring visitors to my farm,” Alhafiti said.

Seeing the popularity of his first farm, Alhafiti has expanded by renting a larger plot of land where he plans to cultivate a wide variety of plants from around the world. This includes tropical trees, ornamental plants, aquatic species, and even roses. His new farm is expected to open within two years, and he has already received numerous requests for tours, even though the site is still under development.

Alhafiti emphasizes the growing demand for educational and cultural experiences, particularly those that offer a peaceful retreat in nature. “I encourage anyone with a farm to open it up to tourism. People are looking for a calm, immersive experience with their families,” he said.

Hatta Strawberry Farm Gets Notable Recognition

Khalfan Humaid Al Mutaiwai, who runs a strawberry farm in Dubai’s Hatta, is another key player in the UAE’s agrotourism sector. His farm gained widespread attention last year when it received a visit from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “The first and biggest visit was from Sheikh Mohammed, which made my farm famous,” Al Mutaiwai shared. Since then, the farm has hosted numerous visitors, including students, government officials, and other notable personalities.

For Al Mutaiwai, agrotourism not only benefits the local economy but also plays a vital role in promoting the UAE’s agricultural culture. “It’s a win-win situation: it supports the country’s economy, allows people to learn about agriculture, and gives tourists a unique, positive experience of the UAE,” he said.

A Growing Industry

The agrotourism initiative is seen as a way to further diversify the UAE’s tourism industry while raising awareness about the importance of local farming. By inviting people to witness sustainable farming practices in action, the program aims to foster a deeper understanding of how food is grown in the UAE, while supporting local farmers who have worked hard to adapt to the country’s harsh environment.

As part of the “Plant the Emirates” program, the MoCCAE’s collaboration with local farms represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable farming, enhancing food security, and creating new tourism opportunities that highlight the UAE’s green initiatives.
