Sharjah Extends Paid Parking Hours, Easing Space Crunch for Residents

Sharjah’s decision to extend paid parking hours in seven-day zones has sparked mixed reactions, but many residents see it as a welcome relief. The changes, set to take effect on November 1, will require motorists to pay for parking from 8 a.m. to midnight, an increase from the previous hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. This initiative aims to free up parking spaces previously occupied by non-residents overnight.

Long-time resident Abu Ahmed expressed his frustration over the difficulty of finding parking due to shop vehicles and commercial cars occupying multiple slots. “Sometimes, we drive around 10 to 15 minutes in the evening or on weekends just to find parking closer to our building,” he said.

With the new extended parking hours, Ahmed believes it will become easier for residents to find available spots. He noted that the additional two hours of paid parking would likely deter non-residents from using these zones.

Delivery drivers also welcomed the changes, stating that it would simplify their parking situation. Mashooq Khan, a delivery worker, noted the challenges of finding parking in busy areas. “I often have to drive around for a long time just to find a proper place to park, especially when delivering bulky items,” he said. The new initiative, he believes, will improve his chances of finding parking close to his delivery locations.

In addition to the changes in public parking, the demand for private parking has surged, particularly in areas near Dubai, leading to increased rates. Expat Saleem Noman shared his experience, noting that his monthly private parking fee has risen from Dh250 to Dh300, with another lot increasing prices to Dh350 due to its prime location.

Overall, while some residents may face higher parking charges, the extended paid parking hours are expected to ease congestion and make it easier for Sharjah’s residents to find parking near their homes.
