Dubai Police’s Smart Cameras Catch Drivers in the Act of Distracted Driving

Dubai’s cutting-edge traffic monitoring system has once again highlighted its effectiveness in detecting reckless behavior on the roads. The city’s smart cameras, which are equipped with the latest technology, have recently captured several alarming instances of distracted driving, showcasing just how comprehensive the system has become in enforcing road safety.

Among the most shocking violations caught on camera was a female driver using not one, but two mobile phones while behind the wheel. In a photo shared by Dubai Police on X (formerly Twitter), the woman is seen holding both devices to her ears during a phone call, with neither of her hands on the steering wheel, putting herself and others at risk.

In another clip, a driver was spotted reading a newspaper while driving, an act that not only distracted her from the road but also blocked her view of the traffic entirely. The paper was held directly in front of her face, making it impossible for her to see her surroundings as she continued driving.

Dubai’s police force has highlighted the capabilities of their advanced traffic systems, which are designed to detect a wide range of violations — from mobile phone use to failure to wear seat belts. Remarkably, these systems can even spot infractions despite heavily tinted windshields, making it harder for drivers to escape detection.

Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic, emphasized that Dubai Police is actively investing in smart traffic technologies to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations. “The use of these technologies supports Dubai’s objective of becoming a global leader in traffic safety and aligns with the strategic goal of reducing road accident fatalities,” he said.

Al Mazrouei also reminded motorists that repeated traffic violations, such as using mobile phones while driving, tailgating, and making sudden lane changes, can result in severe penalties. Vehicles may be impounded for up to 30 days, in addition to fines ranging from Dh400 to Dh1,000 and the accumulation of four black points on the driver’s license.

With these advanced monitoring systems in place, Dubai Police continues to strengthen its commitment to reducing traffic accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.
