British Woman Faces Life in Prison in Dubai Amid Regional Conflict

A distressed mother has revealed her heartbreak after her 25-year-old daughter, Antonia Bettridge, was detained in Dubai and now faces the possibility of life imprisonment over alleged drug offences. The family has expressed fears for her safety, particularly as the ongoing Middle East conflict complicates communication and travel.

Bettridge, originally from St Helens, Merseyside, moved to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023. She initially worked as a sports coach before transitioning into real estate while pursuing qualifications as a personal trainer. Her mother described her as someone whose “whole life revolves around fitness and healthy living,” emphasizing that she does not engage in a party lifestyle and moved to Dubai to build a positive future.

Legal advisers have confirmed that Bettridge has been held under UAE narcotics legislation on suspicion of “possession of narcotics with intent to promote.” If convicted, she could face a life sentence and a potential fine of AED 200,000. Dubai authorities reportedly do not require proof of intent to promote or distribute, making the legal situation particularly severe.

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, has been assisting the family and highlighted the added anxiety caused by regional instability. “When there is regional instability or security incidents, families naturally become even more concerned about loved ones who are already in a vulnerable situation,” Stirling said. She called on the FCDO to support Bettridge’s application for bail pending trial, stressing the importance of allowing defendants to prepare their defence from outside detention where possible.

Antonia previously faced Liverpool Crown Court in September 2023, where she was found guilty of possessing criminal property after £8,000 was discovered in her vehicle. She received a 12-month community order, which included up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities, 75 hours of unpaid work, and £1,200 in court costs.

The mother expressed her fear and confusion over the current situation, saying: “With everything happening in the region at the moment, it is incredibly frightening knowing our daughter is in detention and we cannot reach her. We are worried sick. We just want her to be safe and to have the opportunity to prepare her defence properly. She is 25 years old. Her whole future is at stake.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is supporting a British woman detained in the UAE and is in contact with local authorities. British expats in Dubai have been urged to remain vigilant due to escalating regional tensions.

The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, along with allied forces, has caused widespread airspace closures across the Middle East, significantly disrupting flights. Thousands of individuals stranded in the region are expected to return home as airlines resume some flight schedules, though cancellations continue to affect departures.

Authorities have advised residents in the UAE to avoid areas near security or military facilities, follow local instructions, and stay updated with developments. The FCDO now recommends that all but essential travel to the UAE be avoided.

This case highlights the compounded risks faced by expatriates in the region as political and military tensions intersect with local legal systems, leaving families anxious and uncertain about the fate of loved ones.
