UAE Lifts Partial Drone Ban, Exciting Photography Enthusiasts

The UAE has partially lifted its two-year drone ban, sparking excitement among photography enthusiasts eager to capture the country’s stunning landscapes from the sky. As of Monday, November 25, the first phase of the lift will allow companies and government agencies to operate drones, with plans for future expansions that may include personal use.

The move comes as a welcome relief for many, especially those like Egyptian expat Atef Mahmoud, who had purchased a drone just months before the ban was imposed. “I had just learned to master it and capture some beautiful shots, but then had to pack it away due to the restrictions,” Mahmoud recalled with a smile. He is now hopeful that personal use will soon be allowed, as the Ministry of Interior has confirmed plans to extend drone operations to individuals after an evaluation phase.

Mahmoud, an amateur photographer with over 10 years of experience, is particularly excited about the opportunity to capture the UAE’s iconic architecture from new perspectives. “The Emirates is a country that encourages creativity in photography,” he said. “Drones have allowed us to capture the beauty of cities from heights that were previously unattainable.”

While the current phase applies only to companies, the extension to personal use is anticipated soon. This move is seen as a positive step for the photography community, with many enthusiasts hoping that the opportunity to use drones will be available to all in a safe and regulated manner.

Emirati Explorers Welcome the Move

For Emirati explorer Ahmed Almulla, drones are an essential tool in both professional and amateur photography. “Drones have become an essential tool for photography, offering vast creative possibilities,” Almulla said. However, he emphasized the importance of a legal framework to ensure safe and responsible drone use. “We hope the authorities will expedite the organisation of permits for drone enthusiasts, ensuring everyone can enjoy the hobby safely while respecting others’ privacy.”

Almulla also praised the UAE’s efforts to stay in line with technological advancements while ensuring the safety and security of its society. “This decision reflects the UAE’s keenness to keep pace with technological developments,” he said.

Balancing Innovation and Privacy Concerns

While many have welcomed the move, some remain cautious. Social media user @kawater_144 expressed concerns about privacy, stating, “The places to use these must be determined; we can’t be in the desert camping and worry about someone taking our pictures.”

To address privacy and safety concerns, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has designated specific fly zones for unmanned aircraft. This ensures that drone operations take place in clearly defined areas, reducing potential risks and disturbances. The GCAA has also highlighted that drone operators must follow strict safety protocols and regulations.

A Gradual Return

The UAE’s Ministry of Interior imposed the original ban on drones and light sports aircraft in 2022 following incidents of misuse. The gradual lift of the ban comes after careful evaluation, with authorities noting that drone operators have shown commitment to adhering to safety standards.

For those seeking to obtain a drone operating license, the UAE Drones smart application is available to help companies and government institutions ensure compliance and secure permits, according to the GCAA.

As drone enthusiasts await further developments, the partial lift of the ban marks a step towards balancing technological innovation with safety and privacy concerns in the UAE.
