A UK couple’s dream honeymoon in the Maldives ended in disappointment and frustration after they cut their £10,000 trip short, fleeing the luxury resort just three nights in and booking a last-minute escape to Dubai instead.
Newlyweds Sarah and Daniel Morgan from Surrey had envisioned an idyllic two-week getaway in one of the world’s most romantic destinations, complete with overwater villas, private dinners, and uninterrupted tranquility. But what they got, according to the couple, was “a chaotic, overpriced nightmare.”
“It looked perfect online,” said Sarah, 32. “But the moment we arrived, things started going wrong the service was disorganized, our room had maintenance issues, and the weather was constantly stormy. We tried to make the best of it, but after the third night, we’d had enough.”
The couple said they had spent nearly a year planning their luxury honeymoon, selecting a five-star resort on a private island that promised “ultimate seclusion and service.” But their expectations quickly unraveled.
“Our plunge pool had a leak, there were ants in the room, and we were told half the restaurants were closed due to staffing issues,” Daniel, 35, added. “When you’ve spent £10,000, you expect things to be flawless or at least functional.”
Compounding their frustration was the relentless monsoon weather that trapped them indoors for hours on end.
“We know you can’t control the weather, but there was no plan B,” Sarah said. “The activities desk kept telling us everything was cancelled, and there was literally nothing to do. We felt stuck and miserable.”
After three sleepless nights and multiple complaints, the Morgans made a snap decision: they booked a flight to Dubai, a city they had visited briefly in the past but never explored fully.
“It was the best decision we made,” Daniel said. “Dubai was buzzing, the sun was out, and within hours of landing we were eating at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Burj Khalifa. We finally felt like we were on our honeymoon.”
Since arriving in Dubai, the couple has shared their experience on social media, prompting hundreds of comments from other travelers who have had similarly disappointing stays in the Maldives.
Their story highlights a growing conversation among high-end travelers: is the Maldives still worth the price tag?
“The Maldives has long been marketed as the gold standard of luxury travel,” said travel analyst Priya Khatri. “But the gap between expectation and experience is widening for some guests, especially as costs surge and operational challenges grow in the wake of the pandemic.”
Meanwhile, Sarah and Daniel say they plan to make the most of their unexpected detour in Dubai from desert safaris to spa days and beachfront brunches.
“It wasn’t the honeymoon we imagined,” Sarah laughed. “But in the end, it turned into something even better.
