An Emirates flight from Newcastle to Dubai was disrupted when cabin crew and fellow passengers were forced to restrain a man described as “unruly” after he allegedly became aggressive under the influence of alcohol.
The incident occurred mid-flight on Sunday, prompting swift intervention from crew members who used restraint equipment to control the situation. Witnesses said the passenger, who had been drinking heavily before and during the flight, began shouting at staff and disturbing travelers seated nearby.
Video footage shared online shows the man being pinned to his seat as crew worked to calm him down. Passengers reported that the disruption caused considerable distress, though the flight itself continued to Dubai without diversion.
In a statement, Emirates confirmed the incident, saying: “A passenger on flight EK34 from Newcastle to Dubai was restrained due to unruly behavior after excessive consumption of alcohol. The safety of our passengers and crew is our highest priority, and we do not tolerate disruptive conduct onboard.”
On arrival in Dubai, the individual was handed over to local authorities for further investigation. Under UAE aviation law, unruly passengers can face steep fines, bans from future travel, and even prison sentences depending on the severity of their actions.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has repeatedly raised concerns about alcohol-fueled air rage incidents, urging airlines and airports worldwide to strengthen rules around pre-flight drinking.
Despite the disruption, Emirates confirmed that all other passengers disembarked safely and thanked customers for their cooperation during the incident.
