Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the upcoming launch of the city’s first air taxi station, with official operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. The air taxi project, part of Dubai’s ambitious efforts to revolutionize urban mobility, will initially feature four strategic landing stations across the city.
Khalid Al Awadhi, Director of the Transportation Systems Department at RTA, made the announcement during the Intelligent Transport Systems Conference and Exhibition at the Dubai World Trade Centre. He stated that the air taxi project is a cutting-edge development in autonomous air transport, aimed at offering an innovative and efficient mode of transportation. The initial launch will focus on connecting key areas, including Dubai International Airport, Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah, with a particular emphasis on linking hotels and the airport.
The air taxis, developed in partnership with Skyports and Joby Aviation, will feature designated take-off and landing areas, electric charging stations, passenger zones, and advanced security systems. Tyler Trerotola, General Manager of Joby Aviation in the Middle East, emphasized the potential impact of air taxis on reducing traffic congestion, citing that the trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah would take only 10-12 minutes, a significant improvement from the usual 45 minutes during peak traffic.
The air taxi, an innovative electric aircraft, can carry four passengers and a pilot. It reaches speeds of up to 320 km/h and has a range of up to 160 km. Environmentally friendly and designed to be quiet, with noise levels below 45 decibels, the aircraft aligns with Dubai’s smart mobility and sustainability goals.
The air taxi project aims to reduce carbon emissions and provide a sustainable, efficient alternative to traditional transport. The exclusive agreement with Joby Aviation, signed at the World Government Summit, grants the company the operational rights for six years and ensures the necessary infrastructure and capacity for successful implementation.
This forward-thinking project underscores Dubai’s commitment to integrating modern technology into its transportation network, enhancing the city’s global position as a leader in smart and sustainable urban mobility.
