Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is taking proactive steps to prioritize environmental protection and engage both employees and customers in sustainable practices during the Year of Sustainability.
To encourage recycling efforts, DEWA has launched a smart recycling initiative by deploying innovative machines across its buildings to recycle plastic bottles. Leveraging the DEWA Smart Office app, employees can easily operate these machines, earning valuable points for each recycling operation. These points can then be used to enter raffle draws for exciting monthly prizes.
Since the installation of these smart recycling machines in October 2022, DEWA’s dedicated employees have made a significant impact by successfully recycling an impressive total of 221,900 plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
To further amplify the sustainability drive, a local company utilizing sustainable manufacturing solutions has transformed these recycled materials into over 11,600 T-shirts and other valuable products.
This remarkable initiative is built upon the principles of the circular economy model, promoting economic growth while safeguarding the environment. DEWA’s commitment extends beyond recycling and includes resource reuse, waste reduction, and emissions reduction to combat climate change.
Aligned with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041, DEWA’s recycling initiative actively supports waste management innovation, recycling initiatives, waste-to-energy conversion, and the provision of practical solutions to address environmental challenges.
Furthermore, it aligns seamlessly with DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy, which aims to optimize resource utilization and enhance social, economic, and environmental value, fostering sustainability in the UAE and specifically in Dubai.
DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy encompasses various essential principles such as circular design, optimized asset management, value retention, renewable energy and water efficiency, and the establishment of circular partnerships.
