Abu Dhabi Launches Campaign to Combat Reckless Driving and Save Lives

In response to the ongoing threat of reckless driving on UAE roads, which continues to claim lives despite repeated warnings, the Abu Dhabi Centre for Legal and Community Awareness (Masouliya) has launched a new awareness campaign aimed at reducing road accidents and preventing further tragedies. The campaign, titled ‘Your Safety on the Road is Your Responsibility’, emphasizes the need for responsible driving and urges drivers to reconsider dangerous behaviors that put lives at risk.

Campaign Focus: Identifying Causes of Reckless Driving

Masouliya has highlighted several key factors contributing to reckless driving in the region:

  • An urge to show off: Some drivers engage in risky behavior to impress others or gain attention.
  • Psychological pressure: The desire to keep up with traffic, or peer pressure to drive fast, contributes to reckless decisions.
  • Boredom: Drivers may engage in dangerous driving simply out of a sense of monotony or impatience.
  • Lack of awareness: Some motorists are not fully aware of the risks of speeding, tailgating, or disobeying traffic laws.

Reckless driving includes behaviors like speeding, swerving, and deliberate traffic violations that pose a severe threat to everyone on the road. In a bid to make the public more aware, the campaign aims to directly address these dangerous attitudes and urge responsible road use.

A Tragic Reminder: The Death of Reem Ibrahim

The tragic death of Reem Ibrahim, a 24-year-old newlywed, underscores the urgency of the campaign. Reem was killed in a car accident caused by reckless driving on Emirates Road in Sharjah, just three weeks after her wedding. She suffered critical brain injuries that ultimately led to her death on August 31, 2024.

Her family’s grief highlights the deep emotional toll of such tragedies, and her uncle poignantly pointed out: “Reem is neither the first nor the last casualty of reckless driving.” This heartbreaking incident has spurred the campaign and further reinforced the critical need for greater road safety awareness.

Legal Penalties for Reckless Driving

Masouliya’s awareness drive also seeks to educate the public about the serious legal consequences of reckless driving. According to UAE’s Federal Traffic Law, drivers who deliberately endanger the lives and safety of others can face imprisonment, hefty fines, and license suspension. If property damage or injury results from such behavior, the penalties are even more severe.

The law stresses that driving is not only a personal responsibility but a collective duty for the safety and well-being of the entire community. By adhering to traffic laws and avoiding distractions, drivers contribute to a safer environment for all road users.

Campaign Duration and Next Steps

The ‘Your Safety on the Road is Your Responsibility’ campaign will run until January 2025, with continued efforts to educate motorists about the dangers of reckless driving. This initiative is part of broader directives from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice-President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.

Key messages of the campaign include:

  • Follow traffic laws: Drivers are urged to obey speed limits, signals, and rules of the road.
  • Avoid distractions: Use hands-free devices, avoid texting while driving, and stay focused on the road.
  • Drive responsibly: Treat driving as a privilege, not a way to show off or engage in risky behavior.

With this campaign, Abu Dhabi authorities aim to reduce fatalities and ensure the safety of all road users, reminding drivers that every life lost in an accident is a preventable tragedy. The goal is to create a cultural shift towards responsible driving across the UAE.
