Dubai Airport Rolls Out ‘Click and Travel’: Immigration Officers Now Come to You

Dubai’s new mobile passport-control system lets officers process travelers on handheld devices instead of at fixed counters — and a full check now takes under 15 seconds.

Dubai International Airport has begun a new era of passenger processing with the official launch of Click & Travel, a mobile immigration service unveiled by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs–Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) on September 7, 2026.

Rather than requiring every traveler to line up at a stationary immigration desk, the new system puts the process in officers’ hands — literally. Armed with handheld devices, immigration staff can now walk up to passengers and complete arrival or departure formalities on the spot.

How It Works

Click & Travel combines several verification technologies in one device: biometric checks, facial recognition, electronic passport reading, and automated background screening. Officers connect securely to government databases in real time, allowing them to pull up and verify a traveler’s information without needing a fixed workstation.

Once identity checks are complete, the officer finalizes the arrival or departure procedure directly through the handheld unit — no counter required.

According to GDRFA Dubai, a full transaction takes roughly 12 to 15 seconds. During the trial phase alone, more than 31,000 passengers were processed through the system, giving authorities a chance to stress-test the technology before the public rollout.

Who Can Use It

The service is open to a broad range of travelers, including:

  • UAE nationals
  • UAE residents
  • GCC nationals
  • International visitors

It applies to both arrival and departure procedures across Dubai’s airport terminals.

Officials also highlighted that the mobile format makes the airport more accessible for families with children and People of Determination, since officers can bring the device directly to passengers who may find it difficult to approach a conventional counter.

Does It Replace Smart Gates?

No — Click & Travel supplements Dubai’s existing passport-control infrastructure rather than replacing it. Smart gates and automated kiosks remain in operation; the new service simply adds a mobile layer that lets officers respond flexibly when passenger volumes spike or when processing away from a fixed point makes more sense.

From Trial to Full Rollout

The technology wasn’t launched overnight. Testing began in October 2025 at Terminal 3, initially focused on family travelers. By May 2026, the trial had expanded across all of Dubai’s airport terminals and to a wider range of traveler categories. The formal, airport-wide launch followed on September 7, 2026.

The initiative was developed in partnership with Dubai Airports, Emirates, and other aviation stakeholders as part of a broader push to modernize government services through technology.

What It Means for Travelers

For passengers, little changes on their end — there’s no app to download or new step to learn. The shift is entirely on the operational side: immigration officers now have the flexibility to bring the process to travelers rather than the other way around.

The goal, GDRFA Dubai says, is simple — cut waiting times, ease congestion at peak hours, and make the overall airport experience smoother from touchdown to departure gate.
