Sharjah International Forum Addresses Wildlife Resettlement

The 23rd edition of the Sharjah International Forum for the Conservation of Biodiversity in the Arabian Peninsula focused on the vital topic of wildlife resettlement during the second day’s sessions. Organized by the Sharjah Environment and Natural Reserves Authority, the event brought together over 200 environmental experts, researchers, and specialists from various countries.

The agenda included a tourist tour around the Sharjah Safari Project, providing participants with insights into its natural environments and diverse animal species. Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Environment and Natural Reserves Authority, emphasized the evolution of wildlife resettlement concepts over the past 30 years. The two main types discussed were passive rewilding, allowing nature to recover with reduced human intervention, and trophic rewilding, actively restoring biodiversity through species reintroduction.

Participants presented studies exploring the origins of rewilding, prioritizing species for food rewilding projects, and planning the reintroduction of multiple species with transparent priorities. The session covered examples of reintroduction experiences, including Sharjah’s efforts to expand green areas and reduce carbon, the Seaweed Breakthrough 2030 project, and the return of freshwater fish to the wild.

The third day’s sessions will shift focus to the stranding of marine life, with discussions on experiences and applications in this aspect. The forum aims to enhance global understanding of biodiversity conservation and ecological sustainability.

At the conclusion of the second day, participants enjoyed a field tour of the Sharjah Safari, the world’s largest of its kind outside Africa, showcasing various animal species in 12 distinct environments. The project stands as a premier eco-tourism destination, attracting visitors and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
