In a significant move to stimulate global trade and embrace technological innovations, the UAE government announced the launch of the Experimental Policy Center for Global Trade during the 54th session of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This initiative is part of the Trade Technology Initiative and is established through a partnership between the Ministry of Economy, the Department of Economic Development – Abu Dhabi, and the World Economic Forum.
The center, aimed at encouraging innovation and facilitating the adoption of future technologies, will develop best practices and promote them on a global scale. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed during the forum, outlines the collaboration between the UAE entities and the World Economic Forum. The initiative was unveiled in the presence of His Excellency Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, and Professor Klaus Schwab, founder and president of the World Economic Forum.
Key Objectives and Focus Areas:
Regulatory Framework: The primary objective is to develop a flexible and forward-looking legislative framework that supports the adoption of innovative trade technologies. The focus is on creating regulations that accommodate advancements in technology and provide a conducive environment for their implementation.
Testing Environment: Another key area of focus is the creation of a testing environment that allows companies and institutions to derive benefits from advanced technologies. This involves establishing a space where emerging technologies can be tested, refined, and practically applied to ensure their efficacy in real-world trade scenarios.
Innovation Center: The initiative aims to establish an Innovation Center dedicated to fostering innovation in global trade. This involves actively promoting and encouraging the adoption of emerging technologies that have the potential to revolutionize the trade industry, ensuring that the global trade landscape remains dynamic and adaptive.
Policy Dissemination: The center will play a crucial role in supporting and disseminating policies and legislation that not only address current needs but also anticipate and adapt to future developments. This includes a commitment to keeping policies aligned with emerging trends and technologies, ensuring a regulatory framework that remains relevant in an ever-evolving trade landscape.
Over the next three years, the center plans to produce three sets of globally relevant specialized regulations. The initiative aligns with the need to re-evaluate existing regulatory frameworks to keep pace with digital transformation and emerging technologies, ensuring the flexibility and adaptability of global trade systems.
His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, emphasized the importance of the Experimental Policy Center in addressing the evolving landscape of international trade, providing a platform for emerging companies to access markets and adopting regulatory policies that anticipate future needs.
His Excellency Ahmed Jassim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Department of Economic Development – Abu Dhabi, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to being at the forefront of providing innovative solutions for global economic challenges. The partnership signifies the UAE’s proactive stance in dealing with transformations in the global economy, contributing to the growth of the global trade movement.
