Vegetable Vendor Jailed, Fined Dhs10,000 for Stabbing Man After Altercation in Dubai

A Dubai court has sentenced an Asian vegetable vendor to one month in jail, a Dhs10,000 fine, and deportation for stabbing a man during a street altercation in the Dubai Investment Park area.

According to court records, the incident occurred in February 2024 and involved an altercation between the vendor and the victim, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time.

The case came to light after a bystander filed a report with Dubai Police, stating that he saw the victim kicking the vendor, grabbing him by the neck, and attempting to flee. The vendor allegedly got up, chased the victim, and stabbed him twice—once in the chest and once in the back—before fleeing the scene.

Police and emergency responders quickly arrived, and the victim was transported to the hospital. A medical report revealed he had sustained serious injuries, including a spleen injury and chest cavity bleeding, with recovery expected to take more than 20 days.

During investigations, the victim told authorities he had been walking with a friend after drinking at home when he came across a fight and tried to intervene. He claimed he did not know the vendor prior to the attack.

However, during police questioning, the suspect said he was assaulted first and acted in self-defense. He admitted to stabbing the victim using a knife he used for work, claiming he did not intend to kill but retaliated in response to being attacked.

Following its review, the Dubai Criminal Court handed down the jail sentence, fine, and deportation order, concluding the case with a warning against violent retaliation, even in the face of provocation.
