UAE Medical Experts Warn of Health Risks as Dust Storm Season Intensifies

Dubai – Medical professionals across the UAE are urging residents to take preventive measures as dusty weather and sandstorms return to the region, raising concerns over respiratory and eye health, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Dr. Saheer Sainalabdeen, a specialist pulmonologist at Medeor Hospital in Dubai, warned that while coarse particles in dust storms may not pose a serious threat to the general public, they can significantly impact individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“Infants, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions are particularly vulnerable during sandstorms,” said Dr. Sainalabdeen. “Finer particles can penetrate deep into the lungs, triggering inflammation, breathing difficulties, and other complications.”

He advised residents to remain indoors during dust storms, keeping windows and doors shut and staying in air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to airborne particles.

Eye Irritation and Infections on the Rise

Ophthalmologists are also reporting a rise in patients suffering from eye discomfort during dusty periods. Dr. Amit Jain, Specialist in Ophthalmology at NMC Specialty Hospital, Al Nahda, said dust exposure can lead to a range of eye issues, including redness, dryness, itching, and allergic conjunctivitis.

“Microscopic particles can scratch the eye’s surface, causing inflammation and increasing the risk of infections,” said Dr. Jain. “The dry, dusty air also worsens tear evaporation, making dry eye symptoms more severe.”

Dr. Jain advised the public to wear sunglasses outdoors for protection and to use preservative-free lubricating eye drops to flush out irritants. “Avoid rubbing your eyes, as it can introduce bacteria and worsen irritation,” he added.

Home Precautions Also Advised

Beyond health concerns, sandstorms can leave a layer of grime throughout homes and damage electronics and air systems. Ajay Chaturvedi, Emergency Medical Services Instructor at Prime Hospital in Dubai, highlighted the importance of sealing homes effectively.

“Close all windows and doors tightly, use weather stripping or draft stoppers, and inspect window screens for any gaps,” he recommended.

Chaturvedi also suggested using thick curtains or blinds to block dust entry and covering electronics with plastic sheets or fabric to prevent buildup.

Public Health Recommendations

Authorities and healthcare professionals are emphasizing the following measures during sandstorms:

  • Stay indoors and limit outdoor activities
  • Keep windows and doors closed
  • Use air conditioning and air purifiers
  • Wear sunglasses or protective eyewear outdoors
  • Use lubricating eye drops (preferably preservative-free)
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Cover electronics and sensitive household items

Dust storms are a seasonal phenomenon in the Gulf, and with proper precautions, experts say most residents can avoid serious health complications.
