Just weeks before welcoming his first child, Vinod Puthiya Purayil’s life took a thrilling turn as he was crowned a millionaire. The 29-year-old, who works as an equipment operator at Dnata, won the Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire Series 483 with ticket number 1880.
Purayil, originally from Kannur, Kerala, purchased the winning ticket online on November 30. The win has come at an emotional time, as he and his wife, who is seven months pregnant, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby. Purayil, still in disbelief, recalled the moment he received the life-changing news: “I was driving when I got the call from Dubai Duty Free. I was shocked when they asked for my details, not realizing they were about to tell me I had won.”
For the past four years, Purayil has been pooling resources with friends, family, and colleagues to buy tickets for the draw. The group alternates names on the tickets each month, with about 10 people contributing. This time, Purayil’s contribution of Dh50 helped secure the winning ticket, with his share of the jackpot amounting to around $100,000 (Dh367,300).
Purayil is a dedicated participant in multiple groups, spending over Dh300 each month for tickets. “I spend more than Dh300 every month buying tickets in four different groups, but it’s all worth it now,” he said.
Purayil shared the joyful news with his wife, who is currently in India, and she was overwhelmed with emotion. “I told her about the win, and she started weeping with joy. This is an early gift for our baby. It’s a blessing for our growing family,” he said.
The winner, who considers this moment a collective victory, plans to meet with his group members at the Dubai Duty Free office to discuss their plans for the winnings. “All my group members are meeting tomorrow morning to discuss what we will do with the winnings. It’s a collective joy for all of us,” he added.
Purayil believes the timing of the win is nothing short of miraculous. “I have never experienced anything like this. This is not just my win but a blessing for all my group members and my family. The timing could not have been more perfect, with my child arriving soon,” he said, describing the win as a symbol of hope, joy, and the promise of a brighter future for his unborn child.
