For nearly half a century, John Spiller has carved his legacy in the UAE’s desert. From his first rally in 1978 to directing some of the most prestigious off-road events worldwide, the 72-year-old British expat has devoted his life to motorsport.
Now, Spiller is set to direct the 43rd Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive in Al Ain’s Tilal Swaihan on February 15–16, a role he has held for about eight years.
“I’ve never done a day’s work in my life because I love what I do. Therefore, I can’t really call it work.”
Spiller’s passion for off-roading has taken him from the UAE to some of the world’s most demanding terrains, including the Dakar Rally, Peking to Paris, Himalaya Challenge, Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, and Sahara Challenge.
A Life Dedicated to the Desert
Spiller’s love for the UAE’s golden dunes began during the Dubai Rally in 1978, and since then, he has spent an average of three days per week exploring the ever-changing desert landscape.
“Every time I look through my car windscreen, I think: ‘That’s my office window today.’ My daughter, who lives in London, sees a smoky wall and hears sirens. I, here, am looking at this amazing scene.”
His meticulous preparation is evident—he records every off-road journey, using GPS tracking to archive routes for future reference.
“I had more than 100 files last year from different activities.”
Unlike in Europe, where off-road opportunities are scarce, Spiller feels privileged to enjoy endless terrain in the UAE.
“In Europe, people get excited about finding a 4km track. Here, I can go out for 10 days, drive for 10 hours a day, and keep discovering new dunes, new vistas, new challenges.”
Bridging Generations: A Deep Connection to Emirati Culture
Over the years, Spiller has developed a close bond with the desert and its people. He draws a distinction between “desert Arabs”, who have an ancestral connection to the sands, and younger generations from cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, who may experience the desert in a different way.
His deep respect for local traditions and desert knowledge is a defining aspect of his work.
The Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive: Sharing the Desert Experience
With just days to go before the Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive, Spiller’s enthusiasm is evident. Months of planning and preparation have gone into ensuring every detail is perfect for participants.
“Part of my thing with any event, particularly the Fun Drive, is almost vocational. I want to show people the desert and give them the opportunity to try something new.”
The event welcomes both experienced off-roaders and first-timers, offering a chance to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Tilal Swaihan.
“Some will love it, some won’t. But at least they’ve tasted the adventure.”
Legacy of an Off-Road Pioneer
John Spiller’s contributions to desert motorsport have left an indelible mark on the UAE’s off-road community. With a lifetime of experience, countless adventures, and an undying passion for the dunes, he remains a true icon of the sport.
As the Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive approaches, one thing is certain: the event will be a spectacular celebration of off-road adventure, led by a legend who calls the desert his home.
