Emirates Global Aluminium’s Al Taweelah Alumina Refinery Achieves Environmental and Sustainability Certification

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced a significant milestone in its commitment to environmental and sustainability practices, as its Al Taweelah alumina refinery receives certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI).

The certification affirms Al Taweelah’s adherence to ASI’s Performance Standard V2 (2017), underscoring its robust environmental, social, and governance performance. This achievement also marks a significant advancement for EGA as all its operational assets worldwide are now certified by ASI.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, a globally recognized non-profit organization, facilitates collaboration among aluminum industry stakeholders to establish criteria for sustainable practices within the sector.

Al Taweelah alumina refinery stands out for its exceptional environmental stewardship. It boasts one of the lowest greenhouse gas emissions profiles in the alumina refining industry, attributed to its highly efficient processes and operations.

The responsible management of bauxite residue, a by-product of alumina refining, has been a pivotal focus for the refinery since its inception. EGA’s Research and Development team has achieved a significant breakthrough in the re-use of bauxite residue, transforming it into manufactured soil. Ongoing research explores additional applications, including innovative construction materials—an accomplishment that addresses a century-old challenge faced by the industry.

EGA has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable practices through multiple avenues. Notably, the company was a pioneer in producing commercial aluminum using solar power, a significant step in reducing the industry’s CO2 emissions linked to electricity generation.

Abdulnasser bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, expressed his pride in achieving ASI certification for all EGA operational assets and highlighted the company’s aspiration to produce ASI-certified metal by 2030.

Fiona Solomon, CEO of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, extended congratulations to EGA for achieving Performance Standard certification across its global operations. She highlighted EGA’s pioneering efforts in the Middle East and Africa, where sustainability commitments are put to the test, emphasizing the company’s leadership in responsible aluminum production.

With Al Taweelah alumina refinery’s certification, EGA reaffirms its dedication to sustainable practices, setting a benchmark for responsible aluminum production globally.
