Dubai to Adopt Cubic Metre as Standard Unit for Water Billing from March 2025

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that cubic metres (m³) will become the standard unit for measuring water consumption, replacing the imperial gallon (IG) starting from the March 2025 billing cycle.

The transition aligns with Cabinet Resolution No. (85) of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. (43) of 2024, issued by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, which mandates the shift across the country.

Seamless Transition for Customers

DEWA has confirmed that the smart water meters currently in use are already compatible with the cubic metre system, ensuring a smooth transition without requiring any meter replacements.

To help consumers adjust, DEWA will display both cubic metres and gallons on water bills and customer dashboards during the preparatory phase. The final switch to cubic metres will be fully implemented in March 2025, with customers receiving updates through official communication channels.

Why the Change?

DEWA’s Managing Director and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, emphasized that the move aligns Dubai with international best practices, enhances benchmarking across industries, and supports sustainability goals.

“Adopting the cubic metre as a uniform and globally recognized measurement unit, rather than the imperial gallon, is a significant step towards enhancing alignment with international best practices,” Al Tayer said.

“This transition will facilitate benchmarking across sectors, support our efforts to provide world-class services, and enhance DEWA’s leadership in innovation and sustainability, ultimately benefiting customers and stakeholders.”

The change is expected to simplify water usage comparisons, improve data accuracy, and align Dubai’s water measurement standards with global norms.
