Deports Thousands of Illegal Residents Who Ignored Visa Amnesty

The United Arab Emirates has begun a large-scale deportation campaign targeting thousands of illegal residents who failed to regularize their status during the government’s visa amnesty periods. Immigration authorities confirmed the crackdown this week, citing national security concerns and a commitment to upholding immigration laws.

According to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), the deportations follow multiple grace periods offered by the government over the past two years. These amnesty windows allowed visa violators to leave the country without penalties or to adjust their status legally a gesture many foreign nationals reportedly ignored.

Amnesty Ignored

The most recent visa amnesty concluded in late 2024, giving overstay violators and undocumented workers a final opportunity to come forward voluntarily. Officials say despite public awareness campaigns in multiple languages, thousands chose to remain in the country illegally.

“These individuals were given ample time and opportunity to legalize their stay or return to their home countries without fines or legal action,” said Brigadier General Khamis Al Kaabi, spokesperson for the ICP. “The government has now moved to enforce the law and maintain demographic and economic balance.”

Deportation Drives Across Emirates

Joint operations between immigration police and local authorities have intensified across all seven emirates. Densely populated areas in Sharjah, Ajman, and parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi have seen increased inspections of labor accommodations and commercial sites.

Authorities reported that undocumented workers are being detained, processed, and deported in coordination with foreign embassies. Some are being temporarily held in deportation centers until travel documents are arranged.

“We are working closely with foreign missions to ensure swift and humane repatriation,” said an official with the Ministry of Interior.

Economic and Social Implications

Analysts say the crackdown is aimed at curbing illegal employment, preventing exploitation, and ensuring social order. The presence of undocumented residents, often working in low-wage jobs or in the informal sector, poses challenges for public services, labor market regulation, and national security.

The move also sends a strong signal to employers who continue to hire undocumented labor. Businesses found harboring or employing illegal residents face fines up to AED 50,000 per worker and possible closure.

Humanitarian Concerns

While the policy is supported by many UAE citizens and legal residents, human rights advocates have raised concerns about the potential impact on vulnerable groups, including domestic workers and laborers who may have overstayed due to exploitation or lack of awareness.

“We urge the UAE government to differentiate between willful violators and those who were misled or abused,” said Sarah Khan, regional coordinator at Migrant Rights Watch. “Deportation should not come at the cost of basic human dignity.”

Final Warning

In a statement issued Monday, the ICP reiterated that there would be no further grace periods in the near future, calling on all illegal residents to comply with immigration laws or face immediate expulsion.

“The message is clear: there are no excuses left. The time for leniency has passed,” the agency stated.

Background

The UAE has a long history of offering visa amnesties to help manage its large expatriate population, which makes up nearly 89% of the country’s residents. Past amnesties have allowed hundreds of thousands to either leave the country legally or obtain valid residency permits. However, authorities warn that continued disregard for immigration laws undermines these efforts.
