Kolkata, April 2025 — A disturbing case of domestic violence has emerged from Barasat, North 24 Parganas, where an expatriate woman was allegedly assaulted and confined by her own siblings over a property dispute, just days after returning from Dubai following her mother’s death. A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, has triggered widespread outrage across the locality.
The woman, identified as Smita Dhar, in her early 30s, was reportedly attacked by her brother, sister, and their spouses at the family’s residence in Nabapally, ward no. 5 under the Barasat Municipality. The viral video shows Smita being viciously beaten inside a locked room, with windows and doors bolted from within—effectively trapping her during the assault.
Though the Times of India has not independently verified the footage, its circulation has galvanized public and official reaction. Smita filed an FIR at Barasat Police Station on Saturday, naming four individuals, including her two siblings and their spouses. One of the accused—her brother and considered the prime suspect—has been arrested.
Smita, who had been pursuing higher education in Dubai, returned to India on Tuesday after learning of her mother’s demise. Local sources allege tensions within the family escalated after Smita demanded her rightful share of the family’s assets, which reportedly include a house, gold ornaments, and cash.
“We heard shouting and arguments ever since their mother passed away. Things escalated once Smita came back. When the video came out, we were shocked. We didn’t hesitate to support her and accompany her to the police,” said Bhaskar Mondal, a neighbor.
Barasat Municipality Chairman Asani Mukhopadhyay condemned the incident:
“I was shaken after watching the video. Such brutal acts have no place in a civil society.”
Smita also alleged a pattern of abuse, claiming her late mother had been subjected to similar mistreatment by the same individuals.
“My mother used to confide in me about the torture during our calls. I felt helpless staying abroad. Now, after her death, they tried to drive me out using violence so they could deny me my inheritance,” she told reporters.
A senior officer of Barasat district police confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
“Based on the FIR and video footage, one arrest has been made. We are actively pursuing the other accused,” the officer said.
The case has sparked fresh discussions on the vulnerability of women in inheritance disputes and the urgent need for stronger protections against domestic violence—even within seemingly “respectable” households.
