Australians Flock to Dubai in Record Numbers as Emirate Shakes Off ‘Stopover’ Reputation

Dubai, UAE — Dubai is rapidly becoming a destination in its own right for Australian travelers, with a record-breaking 296,000 Australians visiting the city in 2024—a 6% increase from the previous year. Once seen primarily as a layover between continents, the Emirati city has successfully repositioned itself as a multifaceted tourism hub, drawing visitors with its blend of luxury, adventure, culture, and world-class infrastructure.

The surge in tourism comes amid a broader strategy by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism to attract long-haul travelers by expanding flight connectivity and diversifying its offerings. This year, Emirates Airlines reinstated its direct Adelaide-Dubai service, a move projected to inject more than $160 million into South Australia’s economy and carry over 220,000 passengers annually.

“Dubai has matured into a destination that appeals to every kind of traveler,” said Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism. “We are seeing Australians stay longer, explore more, and engage more deeply with what the city has to offer.”

According to tourism officials, the average stay for Australian visitors has grown to six days—an increase that signals Dubai is shedding its image as merely a transit hub. Tourists are now immersing themselves in desert safaris, water sports, local cuisine, and historical neighborhoods like Al Fahidi, alongside the city’s trademark luxury experiences.

The global appeal of Dubai has been reinforced by a string of international accolades, including being named the world’s top travel destination in Tripadvisor’s 2024 Travellers’ Choice Awards. The city also set a new air travel record, with Dubai International Airport processing 92.3 million passengers this year—further evidence of its status as a major global gateway.

Australia’s growing interest in Dubai reflects a wider travel trend, with local travelers increasingly opting for high-value, experience-driven holidays. The collaboration between tourism bodies and airlines is proving instrumental in driving demand.

With momentum on its side, Dubai is expected to see further growth in Australian visitor numbers in the coming year—confirming the city’s transformation from a brief stopover to a must-visit destination in its own right.
